4 YEARS AGO, THIS CHILD WAS BORN COVERED IN DARK, BLOODY SPOTS (PHOTOS)

4 YEARS AGO, THIS CHILD WAS BORN COVERED IN DARK, BLOODY SPOTS (PHOTOS)

When Dylan Little was born four years ago, his mother Kara and the medical staff were bewildered, Dylan's entire back was covered with a massive dark mark. His legs and arms were also covered with sizeable birthmarks.

The neonatal ICU quickly discovered that Dylan had been born with a rare skin disorder called congenital melanocytic nevus.

"When Dylan was born, over 80% of his body was covered in birthmarks, his back was completely black and bloody; his face, his arms and legs all covered in moles," said his mother Kara.
Dylan's parents Kara and Nikki looked deeper into the condition and feared that his marks could one day develop into a deadly skin cancer. But the affected skin surface area was far too large to simply remove the spots.

Then a ray of hope came from an unexpected direction. Implants like the ones used for breast enlargement were inserted beneath Dylan's healthy skin. The implants were then slowly expanded with a saline solution over the course of three months in order to stretch his skin.

This was an important preparatory step before continuing with his treatment.

Eventually, the implants were taken out, his largest birthmark was removed, and the excess skin was used to fill in the gap.

HIV CURE CLOSE AFTER EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT MAKES VIRUS "UNDETECTABLE" IN U.K. PATIENT

HIV CURE CLOSE AFTER EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT MAKES VIRUS "UNDETECTABLE" IN U.K. PATIENT

British scientists have reportedly removed the HIV infection from a 44-year-old man with a potentially groundbreaking new cure treatment.
The Sunday Times reports "it is the first therapy created to track down and destroy HIV in every part of the body — including in the dormant cells that evade current treatments."

The patient, the first of 50 to undergo the trial, told the Times the results of his last blood test a couple weeks ago showed "no detectable virus." However, he cautioned this could be due to the anti-retroviral therapies he is also taking.
It will take a few more months before doctors can confirm whether or not the treatment has permanently eliminated the disease in his body.
"I took part in the trial to help others as well as myself. It would be a massive achievement if, after all these years, something is found to cure people of this disease. The fact that I was a part of that would be incredible," he told the newspaper.
'Kick and kill'

The difference in this unconventional new treatment is that in addition to taking traditional anti-retroviral drugs to suppress HIV, the patient takes another to wake up the dormant virus. Those dormant cells are why the disease has proven so difficult to cure despite decades of study.
Two vaccines follow to teach the immune system to recognize the reactivated HIV-infected cells and kill them. Scientists have dubbed their theory "kick and kill."
If the drug combination is taken on an ongoing basis, it could prevent transmission as well as the development of AIDS.
"It would be a massive achievement if, after all these years, something is found to cure people of this disease.''
This new treatment was developed by a collaboration of university scientists and doctors from Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London and King’s College London.
The UK Telegraph explains the new treatment is a two-stage approach. "Firstly, a vaccine helps the body recognize the HIV-infected cells so it can clear them out. Secondly, a new drug called Vorinostat activates the dormant T-cells so they can be spotted by the immune system."

The Terrence Higgins Trust, a HIV-focused UK charity, sent a statement to Wired.co.uk saying while there remains no cure for HIV, they welcome the "ambitious" study focused on eradicating the virus.
Science takes a long time, of course. The remaining participants will all need to respond to the treatment and then it will take five years to study each patient to ensure the immunodeficiency virus has been eliminated.
As Imperial College London professor Sarah Fidler said, "It has worked in the laboratory and there is good evidence it will work in humans too but we must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy."

"Doctors from Safe Hands Medicare Center Nigeria have removed this. According to the hospitals social media report, confirmatory results shows that the mass weighed 26kg in Histopathology lab and was a 32cm degenerating fibroid. This makes it the Largest ever mass to be removed from an individual in any part of the world.
Update: this surgery took place in 2014 in Nigeria...but still news to many..so continue reading...
the surgery was done without blood transfusion Access to good healthcare can make a difference. This is the reason I campaign vigorously for universal access to good quality healthcare. It is a common belief in Africa that a woman with a large mass such as this one may have been cursed by someone in her present or in her past life. Some unqualified personnel may even attempt to make incisions (cuts) with unsterilised blades or knives all over her abdomen. She may be given different substances to drink and eat in order to deflate the tummy. Wrong diagnosis can be done in the absence of diagnostic equipments. This is the reason many still die in developing countries"
